Theoretical Examination and OSCE
Internationally qualified nurses who are currently registered with an overseas Nursing regulatory authority (except UK,IRELAND,SINGAPORE,CANADA & USA) and meet the Nursing Council requirements may apply to become a registered Nurse to practice in New Zealand/ Australia.
For internationally qualified nurses, the New Zealand Nursing Council (NZNC) has changed its registration process from the 4th of December 2023.
Nurses who require a competency assessment will need to successfully complete the following:
- A computer-based online theoretical exam, which evaluates your nursing knowledge across a range of competencies, will be offered at a test center through their accredited provider, Pearson VUE, either overseas or in New Zealand. Pearson VUE is known internationally for its experience in conducting confidential examinations across many sectors.
- The three-hour objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), which must be done in person, will be taken at a purpose-designed simulation centre at Nurse Maude facilities. The Nursing Council has accredited Nurse Maude Simulation Centre in Christchurch to deliver its clinical examination for IQNs. Prior to the exam, there will be a two-day orientation and preparation course.
If you hold current registration in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Singapore, United States of America or Canada (British Columbia & Ontario), you may not need to have an assessment of competence prior to register as a nurse in New Zealand/Australia because the standards of practices and healthcare context in these countries are similar. After assessing your application NZNC will advise if you are required to complete the pre-registration test of competence.
